UMBRELLA’S BIOGRAPHY Andries Mashaba aka UMBRELLA was born on the 12th Dec 1978; he was born in musical family in Zebediela village near Mokopane in Limpopo. He started singing at an early stage as a backing vocalist to his brother. He is the younger brother to the late multi platinum selling artist and award winning Johannes Nkuna aka UMANJI better known for his multi selling album Moloi. Umbrella stands for the protector. It shields UMANJI’s fans against the sun and rain because he is no longer here to do that; UM for UMANJI, BRELLA for BROTHER [UMANJI’S YOUNGER BROTHER]. As a young boy Umbrella used to be UMANJI’s backing vocal. At the age of twelve he started to look after his school work as Umanji left them to look for a job. Two years later those memories came back and he started to make a guitar using a five liter gallon of oil as his brother used to. By that time he was staying in Ga Seabe village near Marapyane in Limpopo. Playing at school and in church kept him composing songs with his friends who inspired him a lot and starting to have many fans. In 1999 when his brother Umanji entered in the music industry, he dreamed of himself being there one day. He kept on practicing as his brother was there to teach him more about the music industry, keep on encouraging him to study hard as there is nothing that comes easily in life. In 2007 Dec 16, He found himself having the greatest performance in his life sharing a stage with Baba Maal, Koffie Olomide, Tshepo Tshola, Ringo Madlingozi, the late Umanji, Oliver Mtukuzi to mention the few at Chuene Spoort In Polokwane Limpopo. He then came to Gauteng meeting Mzee wa Africa was a stepping stone and Candy Ngwayingwani of Shaka Bundu fame, who introduced him to SABC ZIYAWA show on 18 April 2009. In June he entered SABC 2 competition sponsored by Lunch bar (SA GOT A TALENT) where he went through till the semifinals of the competition. He was honoured again to be part of Annual Joy of JAZZ festival in Newtown to perform at Nikki’s Oasis on 29 August 2009. | ||
